As we lay on the soft grass gazing at the sky, I turned to face her. Her skin lit up with the dim moon light to a pale blue hue. The light doing its magic with illuminating the right places with an unbelievable accuracy of intensity. I could stare at her for ages. I had been with her for a good couple of months now and knew that she was the one. She had it all in her that I ever wanted in a girl and for that matter she found everything in me that she wished in a guy. Tonight as we lay down gazing; she to the sky which had always fancied her, with all the twinkling of the stars and the constellations that she searched with her eyes beaming with curiosity which would light up when she would finally spot one and then clap her hands like a child who's just been shown a magic trick accompanied by the soothing sound of her laughter that sent magical ripples through the night’s air, while I gazed at her, trying to absorb the infinite beauty that she amassed.
She suddenly turned her gaze to her hand and then towards me. I hadn't noticed it until now but my right hand had been creeping stealthily towards her left hand from the very moment I had shifted my gaze to look at her. And now like a butterfly on a flower petal it rested on her hand- peacefully. As she turned to face me I gasped and my pupils dilated as I felt our fingers intertwine. She smiled and a cold breeze blew her hair and filled the air with her scent. I inhaled deep and she giggled. As our eyes locked into each other’s I could see my entire world shrink in those cerulean eyes. A few moments later which felt like thousand years to me, I saw her moving towards me. Time passed hypersonically around us but her movements seemed infinitesimally slow. What caught my eye was the sudden transformation that she was going through. The features of her countenance that could for once rival Cleopatra were now decorated with fine lines that started from the edge of her eye travelling like a drunkard down her cheeks and then fading away like a gentle painted stroke of an artist. Her skin that was smooth enough to let a snow flake slide was now covered with grooves. She was no longer her former self. Her hair was now milky white in contrast to her erstwhile jet black. The hand with its fingers intertwined with mine was now coarse. I looked back into her eyes; they had lost their shine now.
Time was stealing her away from me. With every passing second I could see age getting the better of her. My vision started to get hazy too, but it was not age that did it to me rather the tears in my eyes. The fear of losing her was something I couldn’t endure. I tried to pull her close to me but it was no avail. The warmth of her touch was fading. I looked at her once again, she had gone, left me like everyone had. Tears streamed down my eyes as I saw wind carrying her away with it, like sand blown away in the desert. I lay there waiting for the same time to ravage me, to take me back to her and everyone else who left me alone. And ask them what wrong had I done to them to deserve such heart crushing pain. I lay there still as a corpse with only the occasional blowing of wind to give me company. I closed my eyes and waited for death to consume me, a wait till eternity. Far, far away I could hear someone calling. “Whose voice is it?†I asked myself. I felt it come closer. With every passing moment it grew louder. “Daddy†it said. “Who is this?†I wondered. “Daddy, wake up.†It said again. I couldn’t fathom the source. And then I felt things shaking violently. I opened my eyes to see the ground on which I lay tear apart. The entire landscape under apocalypse and I was being pulled into it. I closed my eyes again. I felt no fear. Everything was calm, and I could only imagine my meeting everyone in the afterlife. But there was this one jerk that pulled me out of the deep slumber I was in.
I opened my eyes again, but this time I was in a completely different place. It was daybreak already and I blinked my eyes rapidly to try to adjust to the piercing light. As soon as I got a hang of my senses, I saw my daughter shaking me. She was the one who was calling me, I realized. When she saw me awake she climbed over me and said, “You promised me to take me to the place where you first met mommy. We are already late. Get up now, Daddy.†I smiled at her that was all I could do. She looked just like her mother.
